Luft Abidjan

Background

Luft Studios Abidjan will be a 100 sqm high-end recording studio located in the district of Yopougon in Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d'Ivoire. The studio is a part of the art center ‘GOTHImascologi’, an art center estate supporting the arts, music and community owed by the Baya family lead by local famous artist Sompohi Baya who is a professor of the Arts with connections to New York, Norway and Italy. The property has been run by the family since the early 90’s and is now undergoing a transition of upgrading the property with ambition to utilize the space with ambition to create one of few, if any, high end studios in Côte d'Ivoire along with artist residents apartments, atelier, live music venue, art shop and restaurant. Luft who is run by Sompohi Baya’s son Andrew Murray, will be leading the recording studio project.

Our Vision

The vision of Luft Studios Abidjan is to share the fantastic music of Côte d'Ivoire with the world by providing a high-end recording studio, distribution and network links to local artists and musicians, through support of cross-cultural, developmental, facilities with the view towards enriching the vivid music scene and industry through improving cross-cultural understanding and partnerships for progress.

Our Goal

The next phase of Luft Studios, 2023 and beyond, in addition to the cultural exchanges, will involve the building of the studio and artist resident apartments, and furthering our engagement with the local community around the art center with sustainable solutions.In the spirit of professor Sompohi Bayas art (Glaology), Luft envisions forming collaborative partnerships for development as a key strategy for its creative and musical programs. These partnerships are expected to have a multifaceted and sustainable impact.

Strategy

While having a visible presence in Abidjan through the family ties and network, Luft will emphasize support to viable musical projects and activities ranging from recording, production, mixing, distribution and label services. Our activities will emphasize close collaboration with a local studio manager and house producers working in all area’s music genres, artists and musicians that provide assistance with a view to expand development efforts by support of grassroots efforts.

Our strategy also involves working with local music industry and development partners utilizing the already established methods of cultural exchanges in west Africa, while continuing to identify the needs to continue to develop the art and music scene by enabling the local communities to have a greater feeling of ownership of projects. Thereby, community members are better encouraged to fully participate in projects to ensure their continuity.

The Luft Oslo office will be mainly involved in fund-raising as well as implementing monitoring, evaluation, and financial reporting standards to meet investment and funding requirements.
